Soy una antigua profesora convertida en dependienta de librería y luego en novelista. Nací en Nueva York y ahora vivo en Carolina del Norte. Me encantan los animales (sobre todo los gatos), visitar librerías allá donde viajo y hacer puzzles los días de lluvia. Mis padres querían que fuera abogada, pero yo siempre quise ser escritora o bibliotecaria. Soy una lectora voraz y coleccionista de libros. Cuando viajo, me encanta visitar al menos una librería allá donde voy.

The Secret, Book, and Scone Society es la historia de cuatro mujeres que se unen para buscar justicia para un desconocido asesinado. Todas las mujeres tienen secretos de su pasado que les gustaría mantener ocultos, pero poco a poco aprenden a confiar las unas en las otras. La protagonista, Nora Pennington, es propietaria de Miracle Books y biblioterapeuta sin formación. Ella recomienda libros que permiten a las personas cambiar sus vidas. Hemos visto en su página web recetas que aparecen en algunos de sus libros, ¿le gusta cocinar?
Prefiero comer lo que otros cocinan, pero me encanta la repostería. Soy muy golosa y he probado a hacer todos los deliciosos postres de The Great British Baking Show.
¿Cuándo empezó a escribir, de niña, o fue una vocación tardía?
Empecé a escribir de niña. Mi abuelo me sentaba en su regazo delante de una máquina de escribir. Él escribía una línea de una historia y yo escribía la siguiente. Juntos inventábamos muchas historias. Normalmente trataban de niños que visitaban lugares mágicos. Cuando mi abuelo no estaba de visita, le enviaba por correo mis cuentos y poemas. Él me los devolvía con correcciones en tinta roja y caramelos.

Recuerdo que leí Una arruga en el tiempo y pensé: «Esto está escrito para mí». Me encantó Meg y su devoción por su familia. No podía esperar a volver a la biblioteca para sacar otros libros de Madeleine L’Engle.
¿Quién es tu escritor favorito?
Tengo demasiados escritores favoritos para enumerarlos, pero mi libro favorito es El Hobbit, de J. R. R. Tolkien.
¿A qué personaje de un libro le hubiera gustado conocer?
Me encantaría ir a un baile de Regencia y cotillear con Lizzie Bennet.
¿Y escribir?
Agatha Christie. Me encantaría charlar con ella tomando té con scones.
¿A qué personaje histórico le hubiera gustado conocer?
Me habría encantado estar allí cuando Johannes Gutenberg utilizó su imprenta por primera vez. Su invento fue un faro de luz y aprendizaje para las generaciones futuras.
¿Tiene algún hábito de escritura o lectura?
Debo tomar café (preferiblemente con leche). Y una silla con respaldo rígido. Un gato en la habitación es un plus.

¿Puede hablarnos de su próximo proyecto?
Actualmente estoy trabajando en el libro número siete de la serie The Secret, Book, and Scone Society. Cuando una anciana que vive en una espeluznante mansión en ruinas muere repentinamente, su familia contrata a Nora para que valore la colección de libros de la mujer. Mientras Nora rebusca entre la horda de libros y trastos de la mujer, encuentra valiosos libros en miniatura y motivos para asesinar.
Hello Ellery, welcome to El Gato Negro literary magazine. Before we begin we would like to thank you for granting us this interview.
Ellery is a USA Today and New York Times bestselling mystery author with over 40 novels, but who is Ellery? What can you tell us about yourself?
I’m a former teacher turned bookstore clerk turned novelist. I was born in New York and now live in North Carolina. I love animals (especially cats), visiting bookstores wherever I travel, and doing jigsaw puzzles on rainy days. My parents wanted me to be a lawyer, but I always wanted to be a writer or a librarian. I am a voracious reader and book collector. When I travel, I love to visit at least one bookstore wherever I go.
You are soon to publish The Secret, Book, and Scone Society in Spain. What can you tell us about the book?
Answer: The Secret, Book, and Scone Society is the story of four women who band together to seek justice for a murdered stranger. All the women have secrets from their pasts that they’d like to keep hidden, but they slowly learn to confide in one another. The main character, Nora Pennington, owns Miracle Books and is an untrained bibliotherapist. She recommends books that enable people to change their lives. This is a story about the power of friendship and the written word. Warning: It will make you hungry and add titles to your TBR pile!

What led you to write it?
I wanted to create a group of flawed characters that appealed to people so much that they’d want to become members of The Secret, Book, and Scone Society. I believe books have the power to heal, unite, educate, and spark our imagination, which is why reviewers have called this book “a love letter to reading.”
We have seen on your website recipes that appear in some of your books, do you enjoy cooking?
I’d rather eat the food that others cook, but I do love baking. I have a serious sweet tooth and have been known to try making all the delicious desserts from The Great British Baking Show.
When did you start writing, as a child, or was it a late vocation?
I started writing as a child. My grandfather used to sit me on his lap in front of a typewriter. He’d write a line of a story and I’d write the next one. Together, we made up lots of stories. They were usually about children visiting magical places. When my grandfather wasn’t visiting, I’d mail him my stories and poems. He would send them back with corrections in red ink along with some butterscotch candies.

Did you start as a writer with mystery books?
Initially, I wanted to be a poet like my heroes, Rumi, Pablo Neruda, Mary Oliver, and Diane Wakoski. However, I wasn’t paid for my work and soon realized that I’d starve if I didn’t find another career.
What was the first book that made an impact on you and why?
I remember reading A Wrinkle in Time and thinking, “This was written for me.” I loved Meg and her devotion to her family. I couldn’t wait to get back to the library to check out other Madeleine L’Engle books.
Who is your favourite writer?
I have too many favorite writers to list, but my favorite book is J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Which character in a book would you have liked to meet?
I’d love to go to a Regency ball and gossip with Lizzie Bennet.
And writing?
Agatha Christie. I’d love to chat with her over tea and scones.
Which historical figure would you have liked to meet?
I would have loved to be there when Johannes Gutenberg used his printing press for the first time. His invention was a beacon of light and learning for future generations.
Do you have any writing or reading habits?
I must have coffee (preferably a latte). And a chair with a stiff back. A cat in the room is a plus.

Can you tell us about your next project?
I’m currently working on Book 7 in The Secret, Book, and Scone Society series. When an old woman living in a creepy, crumbling mansion suddenly dies, Nora is hired by her family to appraise the woman’s book collection. As Nora sorts through the woman’s horde of books and junk, she finds valuable miniature books and motives for murder.
