Los libros giran en torno a Lily, una joven del Hamburgo del siglo XIX, una ciudad que se transforma r\u00e1pidamente debido al comercio, la industrializaci\u00f3n y los cambios sociales. Quer\u00eda escribir sobre Hamburgo en el pasado, porque es una ciudad fascinante y \u00fanica, con una historia oscura y casi olvidada, sobre todo porque los barrios bajos, donde se desarrollan partes de la historia, hace tiempo que han sido borrados del paisaje. En su \u00e9poca, Hamburgo era un lugar donde conviv\u00edan los contrastes extremos de la riqueza y la pobreza, donde ricos y pobres se ve\u00edan obligados a vivir en estrecha proximidad. Era una \u00e9poca en la que las mujeres apenas ten\u00edan derechos y estaban confinadas en gran medida a los papeles que la sociedad les hab\u00eda asignado, silenciosas e invisibles en las sombras de la bulliciosa ciudad hecha por hombres. El modo en que se entremezclaban la opulencia y la miseria de Hamburgo, donde uno pod\u00eda presenciar grandiosas casas de mercaderes a pocas calles de distancia de la pobreza desesperada, es un llamativo recordatorio de lo tajante que era la divisi\u00f3n entre clases sociales. \u00bfPodr\u00eda contarnos algo sobre su trabajo de investigaci\u00f3n para escribir sus libros?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo todo lo que cae en mis manos sobre el periodo sobre el que escribo. Mi investigaci\u00f3n va m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los libros: visito archivos, exploro documentos hist\u00f3ricos y, sobre todo, me encanta leer diarios de la \u00e9poca en cuesti\u00f3n, ya que ofrecen una ventana \u00fanica al mundo interior de las personas de esa \u00e9poca. Igualmente importante para m\u00ed es visitar los lugares en los que se desarrolla la historia. Caminar por esos lugares me permite experimentar la atm\u00f3sfera y la sensaci\u00f3n de \u00e9poca de primera mano, lo que (espero) a\u00f1ade una capa de autenticidad a mi escritura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El libro que m\u00e1s me marc\u00f3 en mi infancia fue, sin duda, Br\u00fcder L\u00f6wenherz<\/em>, de Astrid Lindgren. Lo le\u00ed tantas veces que literalmente se deshizo. Me ense\u00f1\u00f3 todo lo que pueden ofrecer los libros: c\u00f3mo pueden moldear tu imaginaci\u00f3n, tu coraz\u00f3n y tu comprensi\u00f3n del mundo. Siento que me inculc\u00f3 valores que llevo conmigo hasta el d\u00eda de hoy. Incluso ahora, sigue siendo uno de mis libros favoritos de todos los tiempos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, el libro que m\u00e1s me ha impresionado es El diario de Etty Hillesum<\/em>, una joven jud\u00eda de los Pa\u00edses Bajos que muri\u00f3 tr\u00e1gicamente en el campo de concentraci\u00f3n alem\u00e1n de Sobibor. Escrito entre 1941 y 1943, El diario de Etty<\/em> ofrece un relato incre\u00edblemente personal de su vida durante la ocupaci\u00f3n nazi de los Pa\u00edses Bajos. Siempre temo esta pregunta porque es muy dif\u00edcil de responder, pero lo intentar\u00e9: Louise Erdrich, Elena Ferrante, Richard Yates, Karl Ove Knausg\u00e5rd, Emily Bront\u00eb, Astrid Lindgren, Stephen King, Rachel Cusk, Larry McMurtry, Alice Winn, Lauren Groff, Maggie O’Farrell, Emilie Pine y Madeline Miller, por nombrar algunos. Cada uno de estos escritores ha ejercido una profunda influencia en m\u00ed de diferentes maneras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfY qui\u00e9n ha influido en su trabajo como escritor? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No tengo una gran inspiraci\u00f3n ni un \u00fanico escritor al que aspire parecerme. Creo que todos los autores que he mencionado antes han influido en m\u00ed a su manera, junto con muchos otros cuyos nombres no puedo ni siquiera empezar a enumerar, porque si no estar\u00edamos aqu\u00ed todo el d\u00eda; \u00a1esta entrevista superar\u00eda el n\u00famero de palabras!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 personaje de un libro le hubiera gustado conocer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tambi\u00e9n es una pregunta muy dif\u00edcil. Si tuviera que elegir, creo que Jude St. Francis de Una peque\u00f1a vida, <\/em>de Hanya Yanagihara, ser\u00eda uno de ellos. Hace a\u00f1os que le\u00ed la novela y, sin embargo, sigo pensando en \u00e9l. Otro personaje que se me ha quedado grabado es Augustus McCrae (\u00abGus\u00bb) de Lonesome Dove, uno de mis libros favoritos de todos los tiempos. De maneras muy distintas, ambos tienen un impacto duradero: son personajes que perduran en tu mente mucho despu\u00e9s de que hayas terminado la historia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfY una figura hist\u00f3rica?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simone de Beauvoir. Era incre\u00edblemente inteligente y sin complejos. Imagino que ser\u00eda una de las personas m\u00e1s fascinantes con las que hablar, aunque lo m\u00e1s probable es que se sintiera completamente frustrada conmigo, porque ser\u00eda incapaz de comprender del todo sus profundas ideas y teor\u00edas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfCu\u00e1l es su lugar y momento favoritos para escribir?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encuentro mi mayor inspiraci\u00f3n por la noche, cuando todo est\u00e1 en silencio y Berl\u00edn duerme. Es cuando se me ocurren mis mejores ideas. Sin embargo, mi mente est\u00e1 m\u00e1s despejada por la ma\u00f1ana\u2026 as\u00ed que siempre me resulta un poco complicado averiguar cu\u00e1l es el momento ideal para escribir. En invierno, empiezo a sentirme cansada hacia las cinco de la tarde, as\u00ed que escribo por la ma\u00f1ana y dejo la lectura para la noche. En verano, paso mucho tiempo en mi jard\u00edn, un huerto, donde tengo una peque\u00f1a logia. All\u00ed alterno las cosas: leo por las ma\u00f1anas, cuando el sol sale temprano, y escribo por las tardes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfY para leer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo todos los d\u00edas. Desde que me convert\u00ed en autora, veo la lectura como parte de mi trabajo, y ya no me siento culpable por pasar tanto tiempo con los libros; al fin y al cabo, \u00a1necesito saber lo que hay ah\u00ed fuera! Tambi\u00e9n necesito mantener mi mente ocupada con frases hermosas, personajes convincentes y tramas cautivadoras, para que siga inspirada y aprenda de los dem\u00e1s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfPuede contarnos algo sobre sus pr\u00f3ximos proyectos? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mi pr\u00f3ximo proyecto no se parece a nada que haya hecho antes. Es una novela independiente ambientada en Silesia entre 1943 y 1946, durante los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La historia est\u00e1 llena de giros inesperados y desaf\u00eda la mayor\u00eda de las convenciones del g\u00e9nero. La termin\u00e9 hace unas semanas y ahora estoy en el proceso de edici\u00f3n. Escribirla ha sido una gozada, y despedirme definitivamente de los personajes ser\u00e1 incre\u00edblemente dif\u00edcil.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m 37, a full-time writer living in Berlin. I have a deaf dog named Rosali, and I\u2019ve been vegan for almost 10 years – by far, the best decision I\u2019ve ever made. I travel often to find inspiration for my work, and when I\u2019m at home, I love gardening, knitting, and painting. I\u2019m also a huge fan of horror movies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your latest books published in Spain are the saga A Star Over the River Elbe and The Hamburg Lovers, what can you tell us about the books?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The books center around Lily, a young woman in 19th-century Hamburg, a city rapidly transforming through trade, industrialization, and social changes. Lily comes from an established and wealthy shipowner family, and like many women of her time, she faces the pressures of traditional gender roles and the expectations placed on her to marry well and uphold family reputation. The story takes place in a period of social and political upheaval, where ideas of progress, freedom, and identity are constantly being questioned, not only for women but for everyone. When Lily meets Jo, a young dock worker, opium smuggler, and social activist, she falls in love and understands that she is not content with the life mapped out for her. She wants more than just a conventional marriage; she begins to dream of independence. As she starts to rebel, she encounters the limitations of her world, the societal constraints on women, and the opportunities for empowerment that, for her, mostly come in the form of other women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The novels paint a vivid picture of Hamburg’s bustling harbor, and the contrasts between the privileged lives of Lily’s family and the realities of working-class life. Themes as self-discovery, the pursuit of freedom and the women\u2019s rights movement are central to the storyline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will the reader find? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The books are plot-driven, but their true essence comes from the inner lives of the protagonists. Each character has a complex inner world, and we uncover their darkest secrets, hopes, and fantasies. Lily\u2019s story, in particular, intertwines personal struggles, gender dynamics, and historical events, thus lending her character emotional depth. The intergenerational tensions with her family and her fight for autonomy also create a very emotional undercurrent that enriches the historical backdrop of the books. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What made you write them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to write about Hamburg in the past, because it\u2019s such a fascinating and unique city, with a dark, almost forgotten history, especially since the slums, where parts of the story unfold, have long been wiped from the landscape. In its time, Hamburg was a place where the extreme contrasts of wealth and poverty existed side by side, where the rich and the poor were forced to live in close proximity. It was an era when women had little to no rights and were largely confined to the roles that society had assigned to them, silent and invisible in the shadows of the bustling city made by men. The way Hamburg\u2019s opulence and misery intertwined, where one could witness grand merchant houses just a few streets away from desperate poverty, is a striking reminder of how stark the divide between social classes was. The forgotten parts of Hamburg\u2019s history, its dark underbelly, are almost lost to time, but they tell a powerful story of resilience, inequality, and transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could you tell us something about your research work to write your books?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I read everything I can get my hands on about the period I\u2019m writing about. My research goes beyond just books – I visit archives, explore historical documents, and especially love reading diaries from the time in question, as they offer a unique window into the inner world of people from that era. What\u2019s equally important to me is visiting the actual locations where the story takes place. Walking through these places allows me to experience the atmosphere and sense of time firsthand, which (hopefully) adds a layer of authenticity to my writing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miriam, our magazine is literary, so we are obliged to ask you, what was the first book you read? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I honestly have no idea at all. It is completely lost to time.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which one made an impact on you? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book that had the greatest impact on my childhood was, without a doubt, Br\u00fcder L\u00f6wenherz<\/em> by Astrid Lindgren. I read it so many times that it literally fell apart. It showed me everything that books can offer – how they can shape your imagination, your heart, and your understanding of the world. I feel like it instilled in me values that I carry with me to this day. Even now, it remains one of my all-time favorite books. In recent years, the book that has left the deepest impression on me is the diary of Etty Hillesum, a young Jewish woman from the Netherlands who tragically died in the German concentration camp Sobibor. Written between 1941 and 1943, Etty\u2019s diary offers an incredibly personal account of her life during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. While living in Amsterdam, she grapples with profound questions of suffering, faith, and identity, constantly searching for meaning in the face of the unimaginable horrors unfolding around her. Despite the growing threat of persecution and death, her writings convey a remarkable sense of inner peace and compassion, even as the world around her crumbles. Personally, I have never encountered anything that has moved me so profoundly. As heartbreaking as it is, I firmly believe this diary should be mandatory reading in every school around the world. It stands not only as a powerful memorial but also as a warning\u2014a poignant reminder of the fragility of human dignity and the critical importance of remembering our past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are books for you? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Books are a gateway to understanding what it means to be human, while drawing me closer to my own inner self. When I read a book that resonates deeply, it reminds me that, even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for humanity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could you tell us who is your favourite writer or writers? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, there are so many! I always dread this question because it\u2019s so hard to answer, but I\u2019ll give it a try: Louise Erdrich, Elena Ferrante, Richard Yates, Karl Ove Knausg\u00e5rd, Emily Bront\u00eb, Astrid Lindgren, Stephen King, Rachel Cusk, Larry McMurtry, Alice Winn, Lauren Groff, Maggie O\u2019Farrell, Emilie Pine, and Madeline Miller\u2014just to name a few. And who has influenced your work as a writer? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t have one big inspiration or a single writer I aspire to be like. I think all of the authors I mentioned above have influenced me in their own unique ways, along with countless others whose names I can\u2019t even begin to list, or else we\u2019d be here all day\u2014this interview would definitely max out its word count! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which character in a book would you have liked to meet?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also a very tough question. If I had to choose, I think Jude St. Francis from A Little Life<\/em> by Hanya Yanagihara would be one. It\u2019s been years since I read the novel, and yet I still think about him to this day. Another character who has stayed with me is Augustus McCrae (\u00abGus\u00bb) from Lonesome Dove<\/em>, one of my all-time favorite books. In very different ways, both of them have such a lasting impact\u2014characters that truly live on in your mind long after you\u2019ve finished the story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about a historical figure?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simone de Beauvoir. She was incredibly intelligent and unapologetically herself. I imagine she\u2019d be one of the most fascinating people to talk to – though, most likely, she\u2019d be completely frustrated with me, because I\u2019d be unable to fully grasp her profound ideas and theories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your favourite place and time to write?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I find my greatest inspiration at night, when everything is quiet and Berlin is asleep. That\u2019s when my best ideas come to me. However, my mind is clearest in the morning\u2026 so it\u2019s always a bit tricky for me to figure out the ideal time to write. In winter, I start to feel tired around 5 in the afternoon, so I stick to writing in the mornings and save reading for the evenings. In summer, I spend a lot of time in my garden, an allotment, where I have a little loggia. There, I switch things up\u2014reading in the mornings when the sun rises early, and writing in the evenings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And to read?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I read every day. Since becoming an author, I\u2019ve come to see reading as part of my job, and I no longer feel guilty about spending so much time with books\u2014after all, I need to know what\u2019s out there! I also need to keep my mind engaged with beautiful sentences, compelling characters, and captivating plots, so it stays inspired and learns from others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you tell us something about your next projects? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My next project is unlike anything I\u2019ve done before. It\u2019s a standalone novel set in Silesia between 1943 and 1946, during the final years of World War II. The story is filled with unexpected twists and defies most genre conventions. I finished it a few weeks ago and am currently in the editing process. Writing it has been a joy, and saying my final goodbye to the characters will be incredibly difficult. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miriam Georg es el seud\u00f3nimo bajo el que la escritora alemana Miriam Kraehe (1987) publica sus novelas hist\u00f3ricas. Para lanzar historias de otros g\u00e9neros hace uso de otros dos seud\u00f3nimos: Mina Gold y Lisa Kirsch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miriam se licenci\u00f3 en Literatura Europea y posteriormente curs\u00f3 un M\u00e1ster en Literatura Nativa Americana. Adem\u00e1s de escribir trabaja como correctora y editora freelance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gracias a su primera novela publicada bajo el seud\u00f3nimo Miriam Georg, Una estrella sobre el r\u00edo Elba<\/em>, la autora consigui\u00f3 gran aclamaci\u00f3n en su pa\u00eds natal. El \u00e9xito que consigui\u00f3 permiti\u00f3 que esta obra hist\u00f3rica ambientada en el Hamburgo de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, se tradujera a otros idiomas, entre ellos el castellano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
